A serious multi-vehicle crash brought westbound traffic on Interstate 4 to a standstill Sunday evening after a collision near Exit 38 at State Road 33 in Lakeland, prompting a full closure of the interstate as emergency crews responded to the scene.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the crash occurred just west of Exit 38 shortly before 5:30 p.m. Authorities immediately closed all westbound lanes of I-4 to allow first responders to assist those involved, investigate the collision, and safely manage the scene.
Emergency personnel, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, and paramedics, arrived quickly and began providing medical care to the victims. Officials confirmed that at least two people sustained critical injuries and were transported from the scene to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
Authorities have not released the identities of the injured individuals, and no updates on their conditions have been made available. Officials also have not confirmed the total number of vehicles involved in the crash or whether additional people were injured.
The collision caused major disruptions along one of Central Florida’s busiest transportation corridors, with traffic backing up for several miles as motorists encountered the closure. Drivers traveling westbound were diverted off Interstate 4 at Exit 38 (State Road 33), while the westbound entrance ramp from State Road 33 onto I-4 was also closed to prevent additional traffic from entering the affected area.
The Florida Department of Transportation issued a traffic advisory urging motorists to avoid the area if possible.
“Significant delays are expected in the area,” FDOT said. “Motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes and exercise caution when traveling through detour zones.”
Traffic continued to build throughout the evening as vehicles were redirected onto local roadways, increasing congestion across the Lakeland area. Transportation officials worked alongside law enforcement to direct traffic and minimize delays while emergency operations remained underway.
Investigators remained at the scene gathering evidence and documenting the crash. Authorities are expected to examine vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and witness statements as they work to determine what caused the collision. At this stage, officials have not indicated whether excessive speed, distracted driving, impairment, mechanical failure, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.
Recovery crews also worked to remove damaged vehicles and debris from the interstate before the roadway could be safely reopened. Officials said westbound lanes would remain closed until investigators completed their work and the highway was deemed safe for travel.
As of Sunday evening, no estimated reopening time had been announced.
